The Tin Can Island Command of Nigeria Customs Service, led by Comptroller Dera Nnadi MNI, has once again demonstrated significant success in intercepting illicit substances. Officers of the command successfully executed multiple interceptions of arms, ammunition, and illicit drugs at various locations, showcasing a determined effort to prevent illegal entries into the country through various routes. Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi ‘MFR’, announced on Thursday, February 25, 2024, that the command intercepted four containers loaded with arms, ammunition, and illicit drugs from South Africa and Canada at the Tin Can Island Port Complex. CGC Adeniyi, who traveled from Abuja to address journalists and stakeholders, highlighted the collaboration between the Tin Can Island Command and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
He emphasized the concerning trend of criminal networks collaboratively attempting to undermine the effectiveness of agencies tasked with preventing the entry of illicit substances. CGC Adeniyi stressed the importance of collective efforts among government agencies to fulfill their statutory responsibilities, citing the successful collaboration between the NCS and NDLEA as a prime example of such teamwork yielding positive results.
The Comptroller General, deeply perturbed by the perilous inflow of nefarious substances and weaponry, expressed grave concern over the potential ramifications on the nation. He articulated, “These insidious elements serve as catalysts for individuals to partake in malevolent deeds, casting shadows upon the tranquility and security of our society. The possession of arms not only emboldens these malefactors but also dares them to openly challenge the authority of the state and its security machinery.”
He emphasized, “Disrupting the nexus between illicit drugs, criminal activities, and the acquisition of arms and ammunition emerges as a pivotal strategy in diminishing overall crime rates. Curtailing the impact of drug-induced altered states and limiting criminal access to weaponry can profoundly influence their operational capabilities.”
With evident satisfaction, he revealed the fruits of a successful collaboration between the Nigeria Customs Service and the NDLEA, showcasing the interception and confiscation of an array of illicit substances. The seized items read like a surreal inventory, including 65 packets of Colarado Indica resembling an otherworldly harvest, a Gen2 Airsoft pistol with an almost mystical serial number, and mysterious kegs of unspecified substances, all extracted from containers that seemed to have traversed continents, weaving a narrative of intrigue and international collaboration in thwarting the forces of illicit trade.
