LASWA rescues man who fell into lagoon

The Lagos State Water Authority (LASWA) has rescued Segun Amoo, a middle-aged man who fell into the Lagos lagoon by mistake.

Amoo, who reportedly fell into the Lagos Lagoon via Falomo bridge, was rescued and resuscitated by officials of the Lagos State Water Authority (LASWA) after one of their employees noticed him struggling for survival in the lagoon waters after falling off the bridge on Thursday, May 16, 2024

It was discovered that LASWA immediately activated its rescue teams, who rescued the victim.

Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, confirmed the incident, saying: “Following the distress calls, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, activated the state’s emergency response plans, with a swift arrival of the LASEMA Response Team from the Lekki zone at the incident scene at 8:02 AM.”

According to Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu, “When the LASEMA Response Team arrived at the incident scene, investigations revealed that an adult male, who after resuscitation later identified himself as Segun Amoo, narrated how he mistakenly fell into the Lagos lagoon at the aforementioned location.”

“Information gathered from officials of the Lagos State Water Authority (LASWA) at their Falomo office revealed that the adult male (Mr. Segun Amoo) around 11 p.m. yesterday night was observed by one of their staff struggling for survival in the lagoon waters after he fell off the bridge, resulting in the LASWA Rescue Team’s response.”

“The victim, Segun Amoo, was rescued by LASWA officials and then stabilized by the agency’s pre-hospital care paramedics before providing vital information about himself after resuscitation, stating his home address in Ilaje-Bariga, Lagos, and clarifying that he was not suicidal while narrating how the incident of his fall off the bridge occurred,” he added.

Meanwhile, the LASEMA Response Team went to the above-mentioned address for further investigation, and the Rescue Team successfully handed over the victim to his family.

Mr. Atteji Benuwa, the victim’s brother, who claimed they had been looking for him for some time, thanked the emergency responders on behalf of his family for the rescue efforts and his successful reintegration into the family
