Tension boiled over in Igbogbele, Badagry West LCDA, Lagos, after a stray bullet allegedly fired by an Immigration officer struck a woman identified as Hunsu Elizabeth. The incident, which occurred on Friday, ignited outrage among residents, leading to the burning of the Nigeria Immigration Service checkpoint in the area.
According to eye witnesses, the shooting triggered chaos as youths accused officers of reckless conduct. Multiple videos circulating online showed flames engulfing the checkpoint while angry residents confronted the armed personnel. In one clip, voices shouted at the officers, demanding they remain at the scene instead of fleeing.
The injured woman, reportedly hit in the arm, was seen being rushed for medical attention. Scenes from the community captured residents attempting to control the situation while others voiced frustration over recurring confrontations with security operatives along the Badagry–Owode–Seme corridor.
Reacting to the incident, the member representing Badagry Federal Constituency, Sesi Whingan, condemned the shooting as “deeply troubling,” noting it was not the first time civilians had suffered harassment or danger from uniformed personnel in the area. He called for calm while urging security agencies to show greater restraint and professionalism.
Whingan emphasised the need for accountability and reforms, saying his office would engage the leadership of the Immigration and Customs services to prevent further incidents and restore public trust. He urged residents to remain peaceful and avoid actions that could escalate the tension.
As of the time of reporting, the Immigration Service spokesperson had not responded to inquiries. The incident adds to growing concerns over excessive force and security-related casualties in border communities, where locals continue to demand justice and improved safety.
