Panic gripped Lagos Island on Tuesday as a massive fire engulfed the 22-storey Great Nigeria Insurance House on Martins Street, sending thick plumes of smoke into the skyline and triggering a frantic emergency response.
According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the raging inferno reportedly began from an apartment on the fourth floor of the high-rise building. Within minutes, the flames spread aggressively across the floor and surged upward with frightening speed, reaching the sixth floor and threatening other levels of the towering structure.
A situation report signed by LASEMA’s Public Safety Officer, Mr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, described the fire’s rapid upward momentum as firefighters battled to contain it and prevent a total disaster in the densely populated commercial district.
As of the time of this report, the number of casualties remains unknown, as rescue and firefighting operations are still ongoing. The uncertainty has heightened anxiety among residents, office workers and passersby who watched helplessly as the blaze consumed parts of the iconic building.
Emergency response teams swiftly mobilised to the scene, including LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Federal Fire Service, Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), the Nigeria Police Force, the Red Cross, and LRU Paramedics.
In a show of massive intervention, no fewer than six fire trucks were deployed, alongside a skylift to access higher floors. The LRU Fire Team was also activated to reinforce containment and rescue efforts as firefighters worked tirelessly to bring the inferno under control.
Authorities say recovery and safety operations are ongoing, assuring the public that updates will be provided as the situation develops. For now, Lagos Island remains tense, as hopes and prayers rise that lives will be spared and the damage contained in what could have been a far worse tragedy.
