Court Adjourns Case Against Anthony Joshua’s Driver to January 20
A Sagamu Magistrate Court in Ogun State has adjourned the case against the driver involved in the fatal crash that claimed the lives of two close friends of former world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, to January 20, 2026.
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed that the driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, was arraigned on Friday following his arrest over the December 29, 2025 accident along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said in a statement issued in Abeokuta that the adjournment was to allow for further proceedings. Details of the specific charges filed against the defendant were not immediately disclosed.
Kayode was arrested two days after the crash, which occurred near Danco area of the expressway and resulted in the deaths of Kevin Latif Ayodele, 36, a British-Nigerian, and Sina Ghami, 36, a British citizen. Both men were members of Joshua’s training and support team.
Police sources disclosed that the Lexus SUV, with registration number KRD 850 HN, allegedly lost control after a tyre burst while overtaking at high speed, before crashing into an illegally parked truck laden with soya beans. The impact reportedly tore off the nearside section of the vehicle, killing Ayodele and Ghami instantly.
Joshua, who was seated behind the driver, and Kayode sustained only minor injuries. First responders described the boxer’s survival as “miraculous.”
Kayode, a long-standing member of Joshua’s Nigerian logistics team, was initially treated for minor injuries at a Lagos hospital and later transferred to Abeokuta for interrogation after being discharged on New Year’s Eve.
Meanwhile, both the Lagos and Ogun state governments have confirmed Joshua’s discharge from Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, after doctors certified him fit to continue his recovery from home. Joshua and his mother also visited a Lagos funeral home to pay their respects to the deceased, whose bodies have since been flown to London via Istanbul for burial arrangements.
Governors Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State expressed gratitude to the public for their prayers and support, while also commending President Bola Tinubu for his “fatherly support” during the period.
Police investigations are ongoing, with authorities also searching for the driver of the illegally parked truck, who is said to have fled the scene. The next court sitting on January 20 is expected to provide clarity on the charges and findings from the investigation.
