A leading figure of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo State and renowned estate developer, Chief Barrister Success Obioma Akagburuonye, has issued a stern call to politicians and business leaders to honour agreements, respect human life, and conduct their affairs with the fear of God.
Akagburuonye made the appeal while hosting the Owerri Senatorial Zone Council of Elders at his country home in Ogbor-Uvuru, Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area. The meeting formed part of consultations to identify an acceptable gubernatorial candidate from the zone, in line with Governor Hope Uzodimma’s resolve to endorse a successor from Owerri zone.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, the APC chieftain—who is positioning himself as one of the party’s prospective governorship aspirants—revealed details of what he described as a narrowly averted assassination attempt. According to him, hired gunmen had allegedly laid siege along the Owerri Airport Road and around his ancestral home.
“Fortunately, timely security intelligence exposed the plot, leading to arrests,” Akagburuonye said. “I will not disclose where the suspects are being held, so as not to jeopardise ongoing investigations.”
The lawyer-turned-politician, who also convenes the socio-political movement Hope Rising for Imolites, further alleged that preliminary security reports pointed towards the involvement of a former Imo State governor as the sponsor of the arrested suspects.
“I have no reason to doubt the initial findings,” he claimed. “This former governor has repeatedly crossed my path and has used various tactics to dispossess me of my legally acquired properties in Abuja.”
Akagburuonye recounted that his only interaction with the former governor dated back to 2018, through the latter’s elder sister, over a land-related business proposal that was eventually aborted.
“That should have been the end of the matter,” he said. “However, since then, there have been persistent attempts to confiscate my Abuja properties. The case is currently before the Court of Appeal in Abuja, and I strongly believe these actions are linked to the recent attempt on my life.”
He concluded by urging leaders at all levels to embrace justice, fairness, and the sanctity of life, warning that political ambition should never descend into lawlessness or violence.
