The Nigeria Medical Association has confirmed the release of its abducted member, Edwin Emegakor, who was kidnapped in Anambra State.
Chairman of the association’s Anambra branch, Princeton Okam, disclosed the development to journalists in Awka on Sunday.
According to Okam, Emegakor regained his freedom after spending several days in captivity following his abduction on May 7.
The victim, who is the Medical Director of Crown Multi-Specialist Hospital, was reportedly kidnapped shortly after attending to a patient at the hospital.
Reports indicated that the attackers were unidentified gunmen allegedly dressed in security uniforms during the operation.
Okam expressed gratitude over the doctor’s safe return and commended security operatives, particularly the police, for their role in securing his release.
“Our colleague has been rescued safely and reunited with his family. He is healthy, in high spirits, and responding well after the traumatic experience,” he said.
The NMA chairman also disclosed that the doctor’s release would affect the association’s earlier plan to embark on industrial action across the state.
According to him, an Emergency General Meeting would be convened to review the proposed strike earlier scheduled to commence on Monday.
Okam thanked individuals and groups who supported the rescue efforts and stood by the association throughout the crisis.
He further called on the Anambra State government to strengthen security measures to safeguard lives and property across the state.
The association had earlier issued a 48-hour ultimatum demanding Emegakor’s unconditional release and threatened to withdraw medical services statewide if he was not freed.
