The Kano State Police Command has arrested 345 suspected thugs, drug dealers, and other criminal elements while recovering 270 dangerous weapons during a three-day statewide operation aimed at tackling violent crime and illicit drug activities.
Of the total number arrested, 187 suspects are currently in police custody undergoing further investigation.
The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, disclosed this on Monday during a press briefing at the Bompai Police Headquarters in Kano.
According to the police chief, the operation, which was carried out between June 5 and June 7, 2026, covered all 44 local government areas of the state and focused on identified criminal hideouts, black spots, and drug distribution centres.
Bakori said those arrested include suspected thugs, drug peddlers, and individuals found in possession of offensive weapons. He added that all suspects are being profiled and investigated, with prosecution to follow where sufficient evidence is established.
Weapons, Hard Drugs Recovered
Items recovered during the operation include knives, cutlasses, clubs, and other dangerous weapons commonly used in violent attacks. Security operatives also seized quantities of suspected illicit drugs, including Cannabis Sativa, Exol tablets, and a locally concocted substance popularly known as “Suck and Die.”
The commissioner attributed the success of the exercise to the effectiveness of Operation Kukan Kura, a policing initiative designed to improve visibility patrols and reduce response time to distress calls, as well as the newly established Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), which has strengthened the command’s tactical response to gang-related violence and armed criminality.
Crime Rate Declining, Says Police
Bakori noted that available crime statistics and community feedback indicate a significant reduction in criminal activities across several parts of the state.
“Available data and feedback from communities indicate that crime is reducing across several areas of the state. This progress is the result of sustained operational pressure, improved intelligence gathering, and the professionalism of our officers,” he said.
Reaffirming the command’s commitment to maintaining law and order, the commissioner warned criminal elements that Kano State would no longer serve as a safe haven for unlawful activities.
“No form of criminality will be tolerated in Kano State. We remain committed to ensuring the safety of lives and property and will continue to intensify operations against all forms of crime,” he stated.
The police command also called on residents to continue supporting security agencies with credible information that could aid ongoing efforts to rid the state of criminal activities.
