The League of Maritime Editors (LOME) is set to bring the maritime industry together for a landmark seminar and awards ceremony in Lagos, spotlighting Nigeria’s historic rise to global recognition.
With the theme “Nigeria’s Chairmanship of the WCO Council: The Expected Benefits for the Nation’s Economy”, the seminar will explore the economic and trade opportunities opened by Nigeria’s recent election as Chair of the World Customs Organisation (WCO) Council.
On June 28, 2025, Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, made history as the first Nigerian to be elected Chairman of the WCO Council since its establishment in 1952. He will deliver the keynote address as Guest Speaker at the event, scheduled for September 11, at Rockview Hotel, Apapa, Lagos.
The seminar will also feature insightful papers, including one from the Nigeria Customs Service on the management of bonded terminals and its impact on trade, particularly the ban on pharmaceuticals cleared through such facilities.
Adding glamour to the day, LOME will present industry leadership awards to distinguished stakeholders whose contributions continue to shape the nation’s maritime and shipping landscape. Among the honourees are the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, and the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Dr. Pius Akutah.
The event will be chaired by former Assistant Comptroller General of Customs, Deacon Charles Dike, and will attract key players across the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, heads of agencies, operators, service providers, and consumers in the shipping and logistics chain.
LOME’s President, Mrs. Remi Itie, and Public Relations Officer, Mr. Francis Ugwoke, noted that the seminar and awards underscore the league’s commitment to driving conversations on policy, trade, and industry growth while celebrating excellence in maritime leadership.
