A devastating explosion and fire on a wooden cargo boat in Bayelsa waterways has claimed the lives of 20 people, with many more still unaccounted for.
The boat, carrying over 64 passengers and crew, as well as farm produce, was en route to Swali market in Yenagoa when the tragedy occurred on Wednesday.
According to ASP Musa Mohammed, Police spokesman in Bayelsa, rescue efforts by the Marine Police unit are ongoing, but 20 deaths have already been confirmed.
The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, Bayelsa Chapter, has also dispatched a rescue team to assist passengers on board.
A speedboat operator, Augustine Amayoro, who participated in rescue efforts, reported saving 10 persons, but many others remain stranded in a nearby fishing camp.
The exact number of casualties is still unknown, as the rescue operation continues.
The incident highlights concerns over safety regulations in the marine transport sector, with calls for concerted efforts to strengthen measures to prevent such tragedies.
Target Segibo, Chairman of Southern Ijaw LGA, described the disaster as regrettable and emphasised the need for improved safety standards.
