Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin yesterday visited Bunkure Local Government of Area of Kano State to sympathise with the families of 16 travellers killed in Uromi in Edo State.
He met the families of the deceased who hailed from Bunkure, Kibiya, Rano and Garko Local Government Areas at the At-Taqwa Mosque in the Sabon Fegi area of Bunkure council.
Barau, who donated N16 million (N1 million each) to the families, was joined by the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, Yusuf Ata and Managing Director of the Northwest Development Commission (NWDC), Prof. Abdullahi Ma’aji.
The Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Deputy President of the Senate, Ismail Mudashir, said Senator Barau reassured the families of the deceased hunters that those behind the killing of their beloved ones would be brought to book.
Sixteen suspects are presently being held in connection with their death.
Barau promised to sponsor a motion on the matter when the Senate resumes later this month.
He said: “I’m here to sympathise with you over the tragic incident that led to the death of 16 of our brothers last Thursday. May Allah grant them Jannatul Firdaus and quicken the recovery of those injured.
“I was worried when the incident happened. I had to call the state governor, security agencies and all stakeholders involved.
‘’They swung into action, and so far apart from the 14 people who have been arrested, two more suspects have been nabbed. The state governor(Monday Okpebhola), who visited my house in Abuja, has assured me that the Edo State government will support you.
“We will ensure that the culprits are brought to book and face the wrath of the law.”
Chief Imam of the area, Sheikh Zainul Auwal, who spoke on behalf of the families, thanked Barau for his efforts.
A group, the Civil Society Organisation on Community Advancement and Humanitarian Empowerment Initiative (CSCHEI), called on the Federal Government to take concrete steps to curb insecurity in the country.
CSCHEI condemned the Uromi killing and advised the government to probe the incident.
It also demanded compensation and support for the families of the victims.
The group’s Director-General, Kunle Yusuff, said: “We are deeply shocked and saddened by the gruesome killing of 16 Nigerians in Edo State.
“We demand that the relevant authorities take immediate and decisive action to investigate this incident, apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.”
