Eleven people—three crew members and eight passengers—escaped unhurt after a private jet overshot the runway at the Aminu Kano International Airport on Sunday.
The aircraft, a Hawker 800XP with registration number 5N-ISB, was operated by Flybird Aircraft Management Services Limited and had departed Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, for Kano at about 9:20 a.m.
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has commenced an investigation into the incident. According to the Bureau’s Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Mrs. Bimbo Oladeji, the aircraft developed a landing gear indication problem during approach.
She explained that the flight crew requested several low passes over the runway to enable air traffic controllers confirm the status of the landing gear. Kano Tower reportedly confirmed that the landing gears appeared fully extended.
The aircraft later touched down on Runway 06 at about 10:34 a.m. local time, but during the landing roll, the nose landing gear collapsed. All occupants disembarked safely, and no injuries were recorded.
Oladeji said the NSIB immediately activated its Go-Team, adding that investigators would examine the aircraft systems, operational procedures, maintenance records, and crew actions to determine the cause of the incident.
An eyewitness at the airport said the jet encountered difficulties while landing before eventually coming to a stop on the runway.
Confirming the development, Flybird Aircraft Management Services Limited said the incident occurred during arrival at the Kano airport. The company stated that all safety procedures were followed and that both passengers and crew exited the aircraft safely.
Flybird added that the aircraft has been secured and the incident formally reported to relevant aviation authorities, assuring that it would fully cooperate with investigators as inquiries continue.
