In a dazzling tribute to unwavering dedication, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has bestowed a distinguished honour upon one of Katsina State’s most revered traditional leaders, Alhaji Usman Bello Kankara, the Kanwan Katsina. His steadfast support for the media has earned him the coveted title of “Media Supporter of the Year,” as part of NUJ’s 70th Anniversary celebrations.
The grand recognition came as no surprise to those who know Kanwan Katsina’s deep connection to the media world. His longstanding commitment to the growth and welfare of journalists has had a profound impact not just in Katsina, but across Nigeria. The presentation of the award letter to the monarch took place in his opulent palace, with the NUJ Katsina State Council Chairman, Comrade Tukur Hassan Dan Ali, leading the ceremony. In his address, Comrade Dan Ali praised the monarch’s unyielding support, describing his contributions as nothing short of exceptional.

Kanwan Katsina, gracious as ever, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the NUJ Headquarters in Abuja, led by the esteemed Comrade Alhasan Yahaya, for bestowing him with this prestigious recognition. He promised to personally accept the award during the grand gala in Abuja, an event that promises to be a highlight of the NUJ’s anniversary celebrations.
Under the guidance of Comrade Alhassan Yahya, the NUJ has lauded Alhaji Usman Bello Kankara mni, a retired Comptroller of Customs, as a monumental figure in the advancement of media and a steadfast advocate for press freedom. His contributions to national development and the growth of journalism continue to inspire countless journalists across the country, making him a true pillar of the profession.

The formal award presentation is slated to take place during an illustrious Gala Night on June 21, 2025, at the iconic Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja. This grand occasion will see over 300 delegates, esteemed personalities, and awardees from all corners of the nation converge to celebrate excellence in journalism.
This isn’t the first time Kanwan Katsina has been recognized for his remarkable support of the media. In 2018, the NUJ Katsina State Council also honoured him with an award of excellence. His relationship with the media spans decades, including a noteworthy tenure in 1975 at the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) in Kaduna, shortly after completing his secondary school education. He later pursued his university studies at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria and served as a Public Relations Officer with the Nigeria Customs Service, further strengthening his legacy as a champion of media advancement.
In a world where the free press is vital to democracy, Alhaji Usman Bello Kankara remains a beacon of support, encouragement, and inspiration to journalists everywhere.
