Customs Intercept Vandalized Electric Conductors Worth ₦5.3m in Kano
The Kano/Jigawa Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has arrested four suspects for allegedly vandalizing and illegally transporting electric aluminum conductors valued at over ₦5.3 million.
Addressing journalists at the Kano Customs House on Monday, the Area Comptroller, Dalhatu Abubakar, said the suspects were intercepted by the command’s patrol team along the Hadejia–Ringim Road.
The seized items, he explained, included 13 bundles of vandalized 155mm electric aluminum conductors, measuring a total of 1,071 metres, cleverly concealed with 73 bundles of firewood.
Also impounded was a Volkswagen vehicle disguised as a school bus, allegedly used to convey the items, alongside a cutter pliers suspected to have been the tool for the vandalism.
Abubakar lamented the devastating impact of such acts, noting that the vandalism had plunged the affected community into darkness and water scarcity.
“This singular act has denied the community access to water supply and electricity in their homes and hospitals, potentially leading to health complications, serious injuries, and even death,” he said.
He urged members of the public to assist security agencies with timely information to strengthen the fight against economic sabotage.
Meanwhile, tragedy struck in Dandi Local Government Area of Kebbi State, where gunmen ambushed and killed a Customs officer at the Fingila checkpoint.
Witnesses said the attackers, numbering about seven and riding on motorcycles, first stormed nearby farms, harassing farmers and seizing their food.
“They entered the farms and forced the farmers to taste their own meals. After that, they ate the rest and ordered the farmers to abandon their work, warning that there would be no farming that day,” said Malam Abdulrasheed, a resident.
The armed men later advanced to the road where they attacked the officer, leaving fear and grief in their wake.
