The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered a massive counterfeit alcohol operation in Lagos, seizing 1,800 cartons of adulterated beverages valued at about N350 million.
In a sweeping enforcement operation, NAFDAC operatives raided two clandestine production sites—one at Zamfara Plaza within the Trade Fair Complex and another on Lagos Island—where fake alcoholic drinks were being manufactured and distributed.
The agency disclosed that the Trade Fair Complex site housed makeshift production setups, including plastic mixing containers, crude filtering systems, and a stockpile of empty branded bottles, corks, and packaging materials used to mimic genuine products.
At the Lagos Island location, a suspect linked to the illegal operation was arrested, with authorities alleging the outlet served as a distribution point for the counterfeit drinks. All seized items have been taken into custody for further investigation.
NAFDAC warned that consuming such adulterated alcohol can lead to serious health complications, including poisoning, organ damage, and even death. The agency urged the public to remain vigilant, purchase only from authorised vendors, and report suspicious products or activities to the nearest NAFDAC office.
