President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep shock and sadness over the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who reportedly died while being held captive by terrorists in Katsina State.
In a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu extended his condolences to the late general’s family, particularly his wife, who remains in captivity. He also sympathized with the Government and people of Katsina State, as well as the Nigerian Armed Forces.
The President stated that although the terrorists had carried out their threats, the Federal Government would not succumb to demands for the release of detained terror suspects.
“As I said on June 12, bandits, kidnappers, and sponsors of terror should now surrender or face the full force of the Nigerian state. These windows of surrender will not remain open forever, and no mercy will be shown to those who trade in the blood of Nigerians,” Tinubu declared.
He urged Nigerians to remain united and resolute in the fight against insecurity, assuring citizens that the nation would ultimately overcome terrorism and criminality.
“We will triumph over terror and continue to build a more prosperous nation. General Abubakar’s death should serve as a defining moment in our battle against terrorists and insurgents. We must never negotiate with them on any terms but continue to treat them as enemies of the state who should never be spared,” he added.
Senate Committee Condoles Family
Meanwhile, the Senate Committee on Army has also mourned the passing of the retired general, describing the news as a painful loss to the nation.
In a statement signed by the Committee Chairman, Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua, the committee noted that General Abubakar served Nigeria with distinction throughout his military career and continued to contribute to national security discourse after retirement.
“Throughout his career and in retirement, he served Nigeria with honour and continued to contribute meaningfully to national security discourse,” the statement read.
The committee extended its condolences to the deceased’s family, the Nigerian Army, the people of Batsari Local Government Area, and the entire Katsina State, while praying for the repose of his soul.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the Executive and security agencies to strengthen measures aimed at protecting the lives and property of Nigerians.
“We salute the dedication of our security personnel and urge all citizens to remain united and patient as efforts to restore peace and security across the country continue,” the statement added.
General Abubakar was abducted alongside his wife on May 30, 2026, while travelling to his hometown along the Katsina–Matazu Road. He retired from active military service several years ago after a distinguished career in the Nigerian Army
