Suspected bandits have attacked Government Secondary School, Iluke Bunu, in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, killing a vice principal, a six-year-old boy, and another resident in a brazen daylight assault that has sparked fresh security concerns across the community.
The attack, which occurred at about 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, was reportedly carried out by armed men riding nearly 40 motorcycles. According to the Kogi State Police Command, the attackers stormed the area in large numbers, allegedly targeting students and residents for possible abduction.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Afusat, the Command disclosed that the Divisional Police Officer of Kabba ‘A’ Division immediately mobilised a joint security response after distress calls were received from the area.
Police operatives, personnel of the Police Mobile Force, military officers, and local vigilantes were swiftly deployed to the scene, where they engaged the assailants in a fierce gun battle.
“The combined security operatives engaged the hoodlums in a fierce gun duel, forcing the criminals to flee into the surrounding bush,” the statement said.
The police noted that preliminary investigations have not established any successful mass abduction of students or residents, although assessments are ongoing to determine the full extent of the incident.
Among those killed were the school’s vice principal, a six-year-old child, and a 70-year-old resident. The Command also confirmed that one of the attackers was neutralised during the exchange of gunfire, while a member of the joint security team sustained gunshot wounds and is currently receiving treatment.
The Commissioner of Police has directed security personnel to intensify bush-combing operations and confidence-building patrols in the affected communities. Joint security teams are continuing efforts to track down the fleeing suspects and prevent further attacks.
Residents have been urged to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could assist ongoing investigations and operations.
The police assured the public that further updates would be provided as investigations progress.
