A Lagos based transporter and Chairman of Bonnyway Motors Ltd, Chief Boniface Nwachukwu has noted that efforts to revive the nation’s economy may not yield the desired results without adequate attention being paid to the transport sector, with special emphasis on roads.
Chief Nwachukwu therefore called for a National Transport Policy among other things to fix the sector to promote economic growth.
Speaking, Nwachukwu popularly known as faulted a situation whereby the Ministry of Works would build roads without input from the Ministry of Transportation .
Chief Nwachukwu who spoke to our editor in an interview in his Lagos office recently decried the situation where road projects are poorly funded and not always built to specifications, adding that there is need for a revolutionary approach to the administration of road transport in the country, stressing that the sector is a goldmine waiting to be tapped.
He further condemned lack of adequate drainages on roads which he affects their life span.
According to him, roads should not be treated like an orphan.
Chief Nwachukwusimply known as Bonnyway, also called for the establishment of a Road Authority and the formulation of a Road Policy to take care of the identified challenges.
He added that if roads in the country are fixed, the national economy would fix itself, saying that putting luxury buses on bad roads reduces the durability of such expensive vehicles.
Nwachukwu also appealed to federal government to fight kidnapping and armed robbery with the military might it deserves, adding that it would serve as an encouragement to transporters whose vehicles are under heavy attacks by kidnappers and armed robbers due to bad roads..
