The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Oyo/Osun Area Command, has launched an investigation into an incident along the Osogbo axis that reportedly led to the loss of a life and has since generated widespread public concern.In a statement on Sunday, the Command said it was aware of a video circulating on social media as well as a statement issued by the Osun State Police Command regarding the incident, which occurred on March 15, 2026.According to the NCS, preliminary information indicates that officers attached to the Oyo/Osun Area Command patrol team were carrying out routine enforcement operations in the Osogbo area when the incident occurred.The Service explained that the officers were attempting to intercept suspected smuggled foreign-used vehicles, popularly known as “Tokunbo,” as part of its statutory mandate to curb smuggling and enforce trade regulations.The Command, however, expressed regret over the loss of life recorded during the incident and extended condolences to the family of the deceased.“The Service recognises the sanctity of human life and remains committed to ensuring that its enforcement operations are conducted with the utmost sense of responsibility and professionalism,” the statement said.It further disclosed that a comprehensive investigation had been initiated to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident captured in the circulating footage.The probe, according to the Command, will include a review of the operational roles of the officers identified as Kolawole Suuti and Danjuma Samuel, to ascertain whether their actions complied with the Nigeria Customs Service’s established Rules of Engagement.While reaffirming its commitment to professionalism and the rule of law, the Command also called for an objective and coordinated investigation involving relevant security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force.The Customs Service stressed that such an investigation should take into account all forensic evidence, including the source of the ammunition discharged during the incident.The Oyo/Osun Area Command urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could escalate tensions within the community or among security agencies.It assured that the outcome of the ongoing investigation would guide appropriate actions in line with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
