Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals has achieved a significant operational milestone by increasing its crude oil processing capacity to 700,000 barrels per day (bpd), exceeding its installed nameplate capacity of 650,000 bpd.
The feat was recorded during a performance test conducted by the refinery’s process licensors, underscoring the facility’s operational efficiency, advanced engineering design, and ability to optimize production beyond initial projections.
Speaking on the achievement, Vice President, Oil and Gas, Dangote Industries Limited, Devakumar Edwin, described the development as part of a broader strategy aimed at expanding the refinery’s capacity to 1.4 million bpd within the next 30 months. The ambitious expansion plan is expected to position the facility among the largest refining complexes in the world.
According to Edwin, the refinery’s continued growth will significantly enhance Nigeria’s energy security by eliminating dependence on imported refined petroleum products while strengthening the country’s position as a major export hub for petroleum products across Africa and beyond.
He noted that the refinery’s vision extends beyond meeting domestic demand, with a clear focus on establishing continental and global leadership in petroleum refining.
Owned by Nigerian billionaire industrialist and philanthropist , the refinery commenced fuel production in 2024 and has steadily ramped up output of petrol, diesel, aviation fuel, and other refined products.
Within a short period, the facility has emerged as a key supplier to both local and international markets, exporting refined petroleum products to several African nations and major European destinations, including the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands. The refinery has also supplied gasoline to the United States market and jet fuel to Saudi Arabia, further demonstrating its growing influence in the global energy sector.
The latest capacity increase reinforces the refinery’s status as the world’s largest single-train petroleum refinery and highlights its expanding role in reshaping Africa’s energy landscape.
