Passage of the Electoral Act 2022 (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, 2026 remained inconclusive on Tuesday as the Senate failed to reach a decision after more than four hours of deliberations, largely held behind closed doors.
The upper chamber had begun consideration of the consolidated report of a seven-member ad hoc committee set up to collate and harmonise lawmakers’ views on the bill. Shortly after the exercise commenced, the Senate dissolved into a closed session to review the documents submitted to it.
When plenary resumed, Senate President Godswill Akpabio declined to disclose the outcome of the deliberations and proceeded to adjourn the session to the next legislative day.
The ad hoc committee was constituted last week following extended deliberations on the bill’s provisions. It was mandated to distil lawmakers’ contributions and present a unified report to guide further consideration of the proposed amendments.
The committee is chaired by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Senator Niyi Adegbomore. Other members are Senators Adamu Aliero, Aminu Tambuwal, Adams Oshiomhole, Danjuma Goje, Tony Nwoye, and Titus Zam.
The Senate had earlier deferred consideration of the Electoral Act amendment to allow members sufficient time to study the proposed changes. Tuesday’s closed-door session was convened to enable a detailed examination of the amendments and supporting documents ahead of further legislative debate.
Despite the extended deliberations, no resolution was reached, leaving the fate of the bill undecided as the Senate awaits its next sitting.
