A 46-year-old Nigerian man, Osemwengie Irorere, has been shot dead inside a bus at the Yorkdale GO Bus Terminal in Toronto, Canada.
The incident occurred on Sunday, January 4, 2026, at about 7:00 p.m., according to the Toronto Police Service.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the police confirmed that a 40-year-old suspect, Tyrel Gibson, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
“On Sunday, January 4, 2026, at approximately 7 p.m., police responded to a report of a shooting at the Yorkdale GO Bus Terminal in the Yorkdale Road and Allen Road area,” the statement read.
“It is alleged that the victim and the suspect both boarded a GO bus at the terminal, where the suspect shot the victim before fleeing the area on foot. Officers arrived to find the male victim suffering from a gunshot wound. Life-saving measures were attempted, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.”
Police said the suspect was located and arrested shortly after the incident, and a firearm was recovered.
“The victim has been identified as Osemwengie Irorere, 46, of Nigeria,” the police added.
Gibson, a Toronto resident, was scheduled to appear in court at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre on Monday, January 5, 2026.
The killing comes less than two weeks after another Nigerian, John Onetufo, was stabbed to death in London on New Year’s Eve. Onetufo was reportedly found with multiple stab wounds to the chest in the Lewisham area following a distress call to police.
Paramedics attempted to save him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The UK Metropolitan Police later confirmed that one suspect has been charged in connection with the murder.
