Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola on Tuesday, reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to maritime safety and modernization of Nigeria’s ports infrastructure, identifying safety, as the cornerstone upon which all maritime operations and business success rest.
He also commended the message of the Lagos International Maritime Week and its chief promoter, Barrister Oritsematosan Edodo-Emore, saying her efforts amplify the good focus of the administration.
Oyetola stated this as the 9th edition of the Lagos International Maritime Week 2024 kicked off, with the theme “Navigating the Future of Africa’s Marine and Blue Economy
Safety First.”
In his keynote address, Oyetola emphasized that the administration is fully committed to driving the modernization of ports and maritime infrastructure, recognizing that port efficiency and safety are imperatives for unlocking the full potential of the blue economy.
Oyetola highlighted the significance of ensuring the safety of the waters, stressing that it is crucial for securing Africa’s economic future and unlocking the vast potential of the blue economy.
Taking a hard look at the industry, the Minister highlighted that the administration has recorded a quantum leap in reducing maritime crimes, including piracy and smuggling, in Nigerian waters and across the Gulf of Guinea, through key initiatives such as the Deep Blue Project.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ZOE Maritime Resources Ltd., Mrs. Oritsematosan Edodo-Emore, welcomed participants to the conference, emphasizing the importance of maritime safety in actualizing Africa’s blue economy.
She noted that the conference’s theme is in line with the World Maritime Day theme determined by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
The conference featured a roundtable on maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea, with the participation of the British Royal Navy, and an excursion to the Lekki Deep Sea Port, one of the newest developments in Nigeria’s blue economy.
The Lagos International Maritime Week continues to play a pivotal role in the development of the maritime industry in Nigeria and beyond.
