The maritime sector recently witnessed a wave of commendation as two prominent leaders, the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, and the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, received high praise for their exceptional commitment to staff welfare and career advancement.
The Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporation and Government-Owned Companies (SSASCGOC) and the Maritime Workers Association of Nigeria (MWUN) expressed their gratitude through a heartfelt letter signed by SSASCGOC President, Comrade Akinola Bodunde. The unions acknowledged the duo’s efforts in resolving long-standing employee challenges, notably the backlog of stagnated promotions. Through a decisive promotion exercise, many employees finally saw their careers move forward—a moment celebrated as a landmark achievement.
Comrade Bodunde highlighted several strides made under their leadership, including an increased productivity bonus, end-of-year welfare provisions, and a comprehensive review of the Financial Guide to the Condition of Service, which addressed inflationary concerns. “These steps have reinvigorated our workforce, addressing long-held concerns and boosting morale,” he stated.

On behalf of the unions, Bodunde also pledged improved productivity, particularly in meeting the Key Performance Indicators outlined in the Presidential and Ministerial Performance Bond.
In response, Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho credited the Honourable Minister Oyetola and the Executive Management Team for their unwavering support. “Our ability to swiftly address these issues is a testament to the collaborative spirit and shared vision within our leadership,” Dantsoho remarked. He further commended Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, President-General of MWUN and Deputy President of the NLC, for fostering industrial harmony, ensuring a stable and productive working environment.
Dantsoho assured workers of continuous improvements, emphasizing that their enhanced productivity directly contributes to the nation’s economic growth. His remarks resonate with recent statistics from the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics, which reported trade surpluses in Q2 and Q3 of 2023, driven by increased export transactions through NPA platforms.
This renewed commitment to staff welfare and operational excellence signals a brighter future for the maritime sector, with stakeholders united in driving sustainable growth for the Nigerian economy.
