A Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Alpha Jet crashed on Saturday near Karabonde town in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State. The two pilots on board successfully ejected before the aircraft went down and are reported to be in stable condition.
The incident happened around 4:10 p.m., according to a local source who spoke to Channels Television. No lives were lost, and the jet crashed in an open area, causing no damage to homes or property.
In a statement issued by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, NAF explained that the aircraft developed an emergency shortly after take-off. The pilots were said to have acted swiftly, guiding the aircraft away from populated areas before ejecting.
The statement added that the pilots are currently undergoing routine medical checks.
Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, commended the pilots for their courage, discipline, and sound judgement, which helped avert casualties. He also praised their professionalism during the post-inspection functional check flight.
Air Marshal Aneke has ordered the immediate setup of a Board of Inquiry to investigate the cause of the crash.
The Nigerian Air Force assured Nigerians of its commitment to strict safety procedures and continued efforts to protect both its personnel and the nation in line with its constitutional mandate.
