The Peter Obi has officially emerged as the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress for the 2027 general elections after being ratified at the party’s convention in Abuja. Reports indicate that Obi was the sole aspirant for the party’s ticket and was formally presented with the NDC flag.

His emergence follows a major opposition realignment that saw Obi and former Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso leave the ADC-led coalition and join the NDC earlier this year.

According to reports from the convention, Obi announced Kwankwaso as his running mate, creating what many observers see as a powerful South-East/North-West political alliance ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The development sets up a three-way contest involving:

  • Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the APC, who recently secured his party’s ticket.
  • Atiku Abubakar of the ADC, who won his party’s presidential primary.
  • Peter Obi of the NDC.

Political analysts say the opposition split has reshaped calculations for 2027. While the combined opposition vote exceeded President Tinubu’s tally in the 2023 election, the emergence of separate Obi, Atiku and Tinubu candidacies could once again divide opposition votes.

In his acceptance speech, Obi reportedly pledged to focus on insecurity, economic reforms, healthcare and job creation, while reiterating calls for national unity and good governance.

The national leadership of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), led by Senator Seriake Dickson, on Saturday unveiled a former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections
