The Director-General of , , has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening regional maritime cooperation and capacity development across Africa as part of efforts to unlock the continent’s vast Blue Economy potential.
Mobereola made the pledge while receiving the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Liberia in Lagos, , at the agency’s headquarters in Lagos.
He described the engagement as a reflection of the enduring relationship between Nigeria and Liberia, particularly within the maritime sector, stressing that deeper collaboration among African nations is essential for sustainable economic growth and regional integration.
According to him, enhanced maritime partnerships will not only strengthen institutional cooperation but also create opportunities for young Africans to thrive in the global shipping industry.

“The time has come for African nations to upscale maritime collaboration. The partnership between Nigeria and Liberia will help us build capacity, strengthen regional cooperation, and create opportunities for African youths within the global maritime industry,” Mobereola said.
He emphasized the need for practical maritime training, including sea-time experience, noting that such exposure would equip Nigerian and African youths with the skills required to compete internationally.
“We must collectively build maritime capacity beyond borders. Sea-time training and practical exposure will position Nigerian and African youths to compete effectively in the international maritime space,” he added.
The NIMASA boss also commended the Liberian government for supporting Nigeria’s successful bid for a Category C seat at the , describing the gesture as a testament to the strong maritime ties between both countries.
Earlier, Akinosun said his visit was aimed at reinforcing bilateral relations and exploring new areas of maritime cooperation between Nigeria and Liberia.
He described the maritime sector as a critical driver of economic growth, trade expansion and regional integration, while applauding NIMASA’s efforts to reposition Nigeria’s maritime industry for sustainable development and increased investment.
“Nigeria has demonstrated genuine commitment to maritime partnership and regional growth. Liberia looks forward to deeper collaboration with NIMASA in maritime administration, safety, capacity development and trade promotion for the advancement of Africa’s Blue Economy,” Akinosun said.
The meeting underscored the growing determination of both countries to leverage maritime cooperation as a catalyst for economic transformation, regional prosperity and the advancement of Africa’s Blue Economy agenda.
