The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and the National Hydrographic Agency have intensified collaboration aimed at improving maritime safety through the wider adoption of locally developed nautical charts and hydrographic communication tools.
This formed the focus of discussions during a working visit by the Hydrographer of the Nation, Rear Admiral Olumide Fadahunsi, to the management of NIMASA, where both agencies explored strategies to strengthen hydrographic services and navigational safety across Nigeria’s territorial waters.
Rear Admiral Fadahunsi commended NIMASA for its commitment to maritime development and safety, while reaffirming the National Hydrographic Agency’s readiness to sustain cooperation with the maritime regulator in providing critical hydrographic services for the sector.
According to him, greater compliance with locally generated hydrographic information would significantly improve navigational safety, maritime security, and efficient management of Nigeria’s maritime environment.
“Hydrography remains a critical component of maritime safety and national development. Strengthening collaboration between the National Hydrographic Agency and NIMASA will enhance navigational safety, improve maritime security, and support sustainable growth within Nigeria’s maritime domain,” Fadahunsi stated.
Director General of NIMASA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, said the Agency is prioritising the strengthening of Maritime Safety Information infrastructure, improved enforcement mechanisms, and continuous capacity building to boost hydrographic services in Nigeria. He stressed that strategic collaboration with the National Hydrographic Agency remains vital to achieving safer waterways.
“At NIMASA, we recognize that effective collaboration among maritime institutions is essential to achieving safer and more efficient waterways. We remain committed to supporting initiatives that strengthen maritime safety, improve operational standards, and enhance the overall growth of Nigeria’s maritime sector,” Mobereola said.
Both agencies believe the partnership will reinforce maritime administration in Nigeria and support NIMASA’s statutory responsibility of ensuring safe navigation and shipping through the deployment and enforcement of accurate and up-to-date navigational charts for efficient maritime operations.
