President Bola Tinubu has praised the Nigerian Navy for its remarkable achievements in safeguarding the nation’s maritime domain, declaring that piracy has been effectively eradicated from Nigerian waters while crude oil theft has been significantly reduced.
The President made the remarks on Monday at the launch of the Nigerian Navy International Fleet Review (IFR) held at the Eko Atlantic Waterfront in Victoria Island, Lagos.
The Fleet Review is the flagship event marking the Nigerian Navy’s 70th anniversary celebrations, commemorating the service’s establishment on June 1, 1956.
Addressing naval officers, foreign dignitaries, and military chiefs at the ceremony, Tinubu lauded the Navy’s enhanced operational capacity, noting that its efforts have strengthened security in coastal communities and boosted economic activities.
“Through the effective integration of surveillance systems, rapid response mechanisms, and coordinated operations, you have successfully eradicated piracy in our waters and significantly curtailed crude oil theft and other maritime crimes,” the President said.
“These achievements have enhanced the security of our communities and contributed to increased economic activity, thereby supporting national growth. I am confident that the Nigerian Navy will continue to secure our maritime environment as a critical driver of the nation’s blue economy.”
The event also featured the commissioning of three naval vessels—NNS Mambila, NNS Gurara, and NNS Oloibiri—as well as a presidential inspection parade and the presentation of new naval colours.
Beyond maritime security, Tinubu commended the Navy’s contributions to internal security operations, particularly in the fight against terrorism and insurgency.
“I also commend the Nigerian Navy for its role in counter-terrorism and anti-insurgency operations. The courage, professionalism, and effectiveness demonstrated by the Special Boat Service in carrying out complex missions are highly commendable,” he stated.
The President urged naval personnel to sustain their high standards of professionalism and continue strengthening their operational capabilities to meet future security challenges.
“I charge the officers and men of the Nigerian Navy to maintain this level of excellence and continually deepen your operational effectiveness to safeguard our waters and national interests,” he said.
Reflecting on the Navy’s 70-year journey, Tinubu described the force as a pillar of national stability and economic prosperity, noting that it has evolved into one of Africa’s most formidable maritime forces.
“The Nigerian Navy has grown alongside our nation’s sovereignty, transforming from a modest service into a modern and sophisticated naval power. Today, it stands as an anchor of stability and a key contributor to Nigeria’s economic development,” he said.
“The Nigerian Navy has attained a position of continental leadership. I congratulate the service on emerging as one of Africa’s most formidable naval forces.”
