United States President Donald Trump has signaled that the ongoing war between the US and Iran may end soon, claiming there are few remaining military targets left in the country.
In an interview with Axios on Wednesday, Trump said the conflict, which began on February 28, could be wrapped up quickly. “There is practically nothing left to target. Any time I want it to end, it will end,” he stated.
Despite the optimism, the war continues to create global tension, particularly after Iran reportedly fired on two commercial vessels in the Gulf on Wednesday, setting one of them ablaze. The attacks raised concerns about security in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil shipments.
Trump insisted that the waterway would soon be safe, claiming US forces had destroyed most of Iran’s mine-laying ships overnight.
The US leader also declared that Iran’s naval and air capabilities had largely been neutralised, though he admitted that military operations were not yet finished.
Washington has said its objectives include preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons and dismantling its ballistic missile programme. However, officials have not confirmed whether regime change is among the war aims, following the reported killing of Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei.
Meanwhile, tensions remain high as Iran vows to retaliate. The country’s Revolutionary Guards claimed responsibility for attacks on two foreign commercial ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
