The Enugu State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), led by Dr. Johnpaul Anih, has declared that its governorship ticket for the 2027 election remains open to qualified aspirants from all parts of the state.
The party said it would prioritise competence, electability and capacity over zoning as it strategises to unseat the ruling administration in the state.
Speaking with journalists on Friday after a meeting of the party’s State Working Committee, the Enugu NDC Publicity Secretary, Emmanuel Ugwueze, announced that any capable indigene of the state, regardless of senatorial district, is eligible to contest for the party’s governorship ticket.
According to him, the decision was reached in line with the party’s determination to strengthen its chances ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
“This decision aligns with the party’s determination to win the 2027 governorship election in Enugu State. To achieve that, we are not going to sacrifice capacity on the altar of zoning,” Ugwueze said.
He added that the party’s primary focus is to secure victory in the state and take over governance at the Lion Building.
“Capturing the Lion Building is our major target and we have to explore every available option and strategy to achieve that objective,” he stated.
Despite leaving the governorship position open, the party said it adopted zoning arrangements for senatorial positions across the state in the interest of fairness, equity and balanced power distribution.
Ugwueze explained that the Enugu East Senatorial District seat had been zoned to Enugu North and South Federal Constituency, particularly Enugu North Local Government Area, which he noted had not occupied the position in recent times.
The party leadership maintained that the zoning arrangement for legislative positions was aimed at promoting inclusiveness and ensuring equitable political representation across the state.
