A deadly confrontation between troops and insurgents has left several soldiers and terrorists dead following a coordinated attack on a military base in Borno State.
The Defence Headquarters confirmed that the attack targeted the 29 Task Force Brigade Headquarters in Benisheikh in the early hours of Thursday.
While the military did not officially confirm the death of the Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Oseni Braimah, the Chairman of Kaga Local Government Area, Zanna Ajimi, stated that the senior officer was among those killed.
Residents reported that the insurgents stormed the base with sophisticated weapons, setting military vehicles ablaze and destroying nearby shops. A local resident, Musa Aji, said although no civilian casualties had been confirmed, several soldiers lost their lives during the attack.
According to the military, troops under Operation Hadin Kai responded swiftly, repelling the attackers with what was described as “exceptional courage and superior firepower,” forcing them to retreat.
“The insurgents were decisively engaged and forced to withdraw in disarray,” the Defence Headquarters said, noting that the attack reflects increasing desperation among insurgents facing sustained military pressure.
However, the military acknowledged the loss of “a few brave and gallant soldiers” who died in the line of duty, pledging that ongoing clearance operations would track down fleeing attackers and prevent regrouping.
Tinubu Reacts, Pays Tribute to Fallen Heroes
Reacting to the incident, Bola Ahmed Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the loss of military personnel, describing them as “unforgettable and irreplaceable” heroes.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser, Bayo Onanuga, the President commended the troops for their bravery in defending communities against insurgent threats.
“I extend my condolences to the families of our gallant soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of our country,” Tinubu said.
He described the attack as a desperate move by a weakened insurgency, citing ongoing military offensives that have reportedly neutralised several fighters and commanders.
The President urged troops not to be discouraged, assuring them of continued government support in terms of equipment and welfare.
“Do not lose heart. Continue to serve with honour, courage, and patriotism. The government will stand firmly behind you,” he added.
Tinubu also called on Nigerians and the media to support the military and avoid actions that could undermine morale, stressing that the sacrifices of the fallen would not be in vain.
He further extended condolences to the people and government of Borno State, reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to restoring lasting peace in the region.
