No fewer than 16 persons have been killed in a fresh attack on communities in Niger State, even as security forces recorded a major breakthrough with the neutralisation of 110 bandits across affected areas.
The victims include 14 vigilante members—among them a commander in Bagna, Shiroro Local Government Area—and two civilians, including a woman, following attacks on Bagna and Yelwa communities.
The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Nuhu Nana.
Expressing deep sorrow over the incident, the state government extended condolences to the families of the deceased, commending the courage and sacrifice of the vigilante members in the ongoing fight against insecurity.
110 Bandits Neutralised in Major Operation
In a related development, security forces reportedly neutralised 110 bandits in coordinated operations across several locations in Shiroro, marking a significant milestone in efforts to curb banditry in the area.
According to official figures, 47 bandits were neutralised in Lantan Village (Erena Ward), 21 in Lakupe (Kwaki Ward), 16 in Luwidna (Kwaki Ward), 20 in Farin Kasa (Allawa Ward), and six in Rafin Barden Dawaki (Kurebe Ward).
The government described the outcome as a reflection of the effectiveness and resilience of ongoing joint security operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks and restoring normalcy to troubled communities.
Government Reaffirms Commitment
Reaffirming its commitment to restoring peace in Shiroro and surrounding areas, the state government said additional reinforcements and strategic measures had been deployed to sustain the current momentum.
Residents were advised to remain vigilant, limit unnecessary movement in vulnerable areas, and cooperate fully with security agencies by providing timely and credible information.
Authorities also assured the public that the situation is being closely monitored, urging citizens to remain calm and united as efforts continue to secure lasting peace.
