Armed bandits have abducted seven students in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State, sparking fresh concerns over insecurity in the region.
The students were reportedly kidnapped in the early hours of Wednesday when heavily armed assailants stormed their residences on the outskirts of the Low-Cost Area and whisked them away to an unknown location.
The attack occurred at about 4:00 a.m., according to local sources.
Confirming the incident, the Zamfara State Police Command disclosed that one of the abducted students managed to escape from captivity and has since been reunited with security authorities.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Yazid Abubakar, said a joint team comprising police tactical operatives and military personnel attached to Operation Fansar Yamma was immediately deployed to the area following reports of the abduction.
However, the attackers had already fled before security operatives arrived at the scene.
Abubakar stated that security agencies have intensified search-and-rescue efforts to secure the release of the remaining students and bring the perpetrators to justice.
He assured residents that security forces are working tirelessly to ensure the safe return of the victims while maintaining pressure on criminal elements operating in the area.
The police spokesperson also appealed to members of the public to remain calm and provide credible information that could assist ongoing rescue operations.
The latest incident adds to growing concerns over the recurring attacks on schools and communities in parts of the North-West, where banditry and kidnapping for ransom continue to pose serious security challenges.
